By the way, you posted this topic on General Gas Talk, which is on the NATIONAL board, instead of posting it under Boston Discussion. Had you done that, it would have been limited to the Boston area.

by CaptSquid  Sep 21, 2012

You posted it on BostonGasprices.com, but didn't post it in the local forums. It was YOUR error.

As for posting cash only prices, here's the FAQ:

Q: Do I post the cash price, or the credit price? Show Answer Link to This
A: Differences in Cash/credit prices are common in some areas as a result of stations needing to offset the additional costs of these transactions.

GasBuddy's goal is to help everyone make wise fueling decisions.

When reporting prices for stations in areas that have different prices based on method of payment, we ask that you post the CASH price where it exists. If the station does not offer a cash price, the standard price should be reported.

The Comments field may be used to include a note about cash/credit prices, but this is not required.

Nowhere in there did the mods state that you had to post the cheapest prices.

by CaptSquid  Sep 20, 2012

No, I didn't miss the point. The fact is that the moderators have determined that we are to post ONLY cash prices and indicate in the comments block how much more you will be charged if you use plastic.

In my area, we are not charged more for using plastic at the majority of the local stations. At the stations that cater to interstate traffic, however, they DO charge more (usally around 6¢) for the privilege (?) and convenience of using a CREDIT card (not a debit card).

Perhaps you should raise this hoary topic on your Boston boards and see what type of a response you may get.

by S_Curmudgeon  Sep 20, 2012

You have missed the point. The discussion was specifically of the problem that a posted price on GasPrices.com may be a cash price or a credit price and one cannot determine which without actually traveling to the station. The issue of discount or not - is a matter of semantics in the GasPrices.com policy and not a matter under discussion. However as to your contention about violation of credit card agreement - that is now moot as a result of the Federal Government Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the enabling legislation which vitiates all such contract language. I urge you to read up on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the changes that are and will occur as merchants offer cash discounts.

by CaptSquid  Sep 20, 2012

Cash is NOT a discount. You are being charged MORE by the merchant if you pay by plastic directly in violation of their agreement with the credit card company. They are NOT to try to recoup their losses by charging the consumer more. They (the merchant) are supposed to eat the costs of a credit card for each and every plastic purchase.

I used to do that until I realized that the system ignores it. Sometimes, you may find the comment still visible on the web version, but it is hard to find, and on the more used mobile version, not found at all. And the price sort totally ignores any comment.

by dealr  Sep 20, 2012

i'm sorry, I put the word "cash" in the comment section when I post prices.

by S_Curmudgeon  Sep 20, 2012

I don't know what you are looking at or where you are posting prices, BUT there is NO such check box on the web posting page http://www.bostongasprices.com/ReportGasPrices.aspx and there is NO such click box on the iPhone mobile app from Gasprices.com I wish there was and that the viewer could see the indication - but there is none!

by dealr  Sep 20, 2012

I agree, but there is check box to indicate the "cash" price as I have done. The spirit of reporting is to allow someone to shop for the cheapest price, but will be upset to drive to a station and realize the credit price is 10 cents higher and not have cash on them. The cash price discount is becoming more standard in the industry.

by S_Curmudgeon  Sep 20, 2012

dealr, although your observation is correct, your statement violates the policy of GasPrices.com which specifically states that the price to be posted is the lowest cost irrespective of payment method. I agree with you that it is annoying that the gasprices.com report has no means of indicating a cash price v. credit price - and I have repeatedly submitted requests that such a means of reporting be added. However, at the moment their policy remains that the price posted is to be the lowest.
