East coast consumers are hit hardest

GasBuddy Blog -- When the Dept. of Energy released its weekly report yesterday refinery utilization rates by region showed the East Coast refineries operating at 55.8%, by far the lowest rate in the country.

The east coast's low output is directly tied to the closings of several Sunoco and Conoco-Phillips refineries...And we reported earlier on these and also that Colonial Pipeline has taken steps to increase capacity there. But Colonial's efforts may not be enough...

Colonial Pipeline spokesman Steve Baker said this morning that he could not speculate on whether Colonial's expansion in the northeast will be enough by itself to sufficiently compensate for the lost refinery capacity. "Colonial's role is to transport the fuel from...

Left coast fuel ‘was’ higher priced than the rest of the country. With the reduction of right coast refinery ability their fuel costs have risen.
STOP Big oil from selling fuel and natural gas on the world market for higher prices, there will be NO price reduction for the cost of fuel or natural gas IN the US. Barry will support natural gas and oil production for sale on the world market to pay for his ‘spending gone wild’ addiction. The US ‘oil and natural gas resources’ belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! Speculators, manipulators and the banks continue to unfairly and unjustly make the driving public pay higher prices at the pump for their benefit.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle is, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Wanda: there are more rigs than ever w/in US borders. And it's not that the government doesn't approve new refineries, it's that Pig Oil does not want to build new or modernize existing ones b/c it is cutting into the greed profit margins.

baddog: Pig Oil will always try to give "reasonable" explanations so as to disguise any barely veiled greed.

That explanation seems to make sense, but then why are gas prices jumping in areas where we have a surplus in storage? Seems to me that greed plays a much larger role.

Without adequate supply, there will be serious price increases. Simple laws of economics.

us4usa Answer to ur ??
I have thought long and hard on this before, it would probably take 4-10 days at most; with that said, 7-10 days concerns me.
My concern, is that some communities, the brand outlets maybe mom & pop operations vice corporate operated; my goal is not to hurt them or their employees; they in themselves are only trying to make a living my pumping fuel. If denial of patronage is too long, it begins to hurt the little guy.
I am concerned for the employees at these outlets as they are the unfortunate pawns in this melee.

Sorry txkrb your monetary calculations are off.

Cdn price today 09 Feb was (122.9 Ltr) or 122.9 X 3.78) = 464.562 cents/US Gal or $4.64 point 562

My area, tomorrow, the price is going up to 125.2 cents Ltr or 473.256 cents ($4.73) US Gal.

CdnLynx:
Petroleum industry conspires to attack the little guy, (we the consumer); the consumer should retaliate. Pick one, the Largest EXXON/ESSO and not purchase fuel from them only their competitors; this sends a msg to the industry, and it disrupts their refineries, their storage and distribution and their financials. They may have to sell their refined products to their competitors at wholesale prices vice pirate retail prices at their own outlets. Target EXXON/ESSO.

Question: How long are you talking about days weeks or months???

If our government would let us build refineries & drill for oil in the U.S. more we would not have so many problems.

They just want to keep the prices high.

This is blatant price manipulation. I don't care what name the industry puts on it, the only way to keep the retail price high and higher is to reduce the supply. Maintenance, export, shutdowns, you name it. More money for the oil companies at every level.

The refineries are just looking for Federal money to do upgrades to their infrastructure that they should have done 20 yrs. ago.

Funny how the article just sneaks in a few non-Eastern states. Soon, all states will be paying through the nose. Wait, I mean YOU will be.

Another reason we should figure out how to convert to CNG. Maybe the utility companies should kick in and help (but they'll probably charge high prices, too)
