Both sides of the political spectrum have been touting this. Not only would Alberta and Saskatchewan get substantially higher (normal market) prices selling oil to Canadians in place of selling it to the US at a huge forced discount, but all the jobs would accrue to Canada....

CPTNCANADA writes: Alberta's oil sand producers have tried to send their oil south but were stymied by Barack Obama and the opponents of the Keystone pipeline. _____ The Keystone pipeline will eventually be built. The pipeline was originally routed through some very valuable land and we had only Big Oil's word that it was safe. More investigation is required before building can begin. The Obama administration has been remarkably pragmatic about its energy policy and has not opposed energy development if there was a safe plan in place. So it will be with the Keystone Pipeline.

Look at the price for gasoline, diesel, and other related petroleum products in those countries where they FIRST take care of their people, THEN sell the excess to the international markets - in contrast to those that sell FIRST to the international markets, THEN sell at market price to their people.
You will find a list of coutries with costs much below our own - in contrast to countries with costs the same of higher than our own.
And that's why you will see significant heal-dragging by industry and the Harper administration in ever allowing a dilbit (tar sands) pipeline to eastern Canada...

Big oil wants the pipeline to go where the money is. East is probably their least profitable option.

I agree that they should take care of their own people as "Priority One", then consider what is best for the country wrt where they sell any surplus.

sending the oil to refineries in sarnia would benefit the whole east coast of canada and the u.s.a. pig oil won't let it happen .

Well some one up there understands business, and job creation, not like those in the White House. No if get Romney in office perhaps he will approve the Keystone line before it is to late.

I find it kind of ironic that PM Steven Harper was blasting the United States for blocking the pipeline yet his own country is doing the same thing trying to build one heading west. It will be interesting to see how the eastward pipeline proposal goes. It would be funny if they throw up the same objections. Perhaps the opposition understands the risks with this oil not to mention we really do not have any spare refining capacity to handle it. We just lost a refinery in New Brunswick and gas prices on the east coast went up $.10/gallon overnight.
